[1.12.5] Niven's Ringworld - v1.1.8

KSP's first landable ringworld, inspired by Larry Niven's Sci-fi book Ringworld.

v1.1.8 is available in CKAN now.

Overview

The ringworld that has appeared orbiting around Kerbol has a radius of 15,000,000 km, completely encircling Kerbin's orbit. It spins at about 386 km/s (863,457 miles per hour) at the surface relative to the sun, giving the whole ringworld artificial centrifugal gravity. It is about 1/10 the size of the real-deal ringworld from Niven's book. Panels orbit around the sun, blocking the sun's light from reaching certain parts of the ringworld to dictate the day/night cycle.

The ringworld is complete with procedural terrain generation, ringworld walls, and structures that mimic what is described in the book. Some rare structures span over 120 km (74.5 miles). There are landmarks scattered about the ringworld, such as the rimwall terminal and the fist of god. The terrains are separated into biomes, and you will see deserts, plains, forests, and more scattered about the entirety of the ringworld surface.

Gameplay

  • Science expeditions: Can be conducted in various places, such as in each biome of the ringworld, landmarks, megastructures, and even near the panels that control the day/night cycle of the ringworld.
  • Ringworld control panel: When launching a spaceship/spaceplane, you will see this icon. When clicked, it will show various sliders and buttons you can fiddle around with. The following are the main stuff you can use:
  • In the "Expeditions" tab, there is a button to do a spin-matched teleport above a certain landmark or above a random location, with a slider bar that sets how far up from the ground you want to be teleported to. (Sandbox Mode Only)
  • In the "Settings" tab, there is a dropdown menu displaying "Quality Preset". This is to select high or low detail visuals. The presets range from Rotten Potato to Absolute Cow. Select whichever preset you are content with according to how beefy your computer is. Save the game to save your selected preset.
  • In the same "Rings" tab, you get to add/delete/edit the Ringworlds that exists in the save you are on. It shows a few boxes to fill out and lets you spawn a ringworld wherever you want, whatever radius or width, centered around whichever celestial body, and so on. If you have more than 1 Ringworld in your system, you select which ringworld to change the settings or teleport to though this menu. (Sandbox Mode Only)

  • Entering the Ringworld: Since the default ringworld has a tangential speed of about 386 km/s, entering the ringworld using stock parts alone is practically impossible. I recommend using the sandbox mode as of now, which allows you to do various ringworld manipulations, including a spin-matched teleport to the ringworld from the ringworld control panel (see above).

  • If you really want to enter in the traditional way, I suggest you use other parts mods.

  • Ringworld Configs: Since v1.1.7, the Niven's Ringworld mod can now be configured easily. Now players can add their own Ringworlds to their system to best fit their modding needs for their KSP instances. This version also adds 4 default Ringworld configs users can choose from: The 1/10th scale Ringworld orbiting around Kerbol, the same scale Ringworld orbiting around a star 0.1 ly away, the cannon full-scale Ringworld around Kerbol, and the cannon full-scale Ringworld orbiting around a star 1 ly away. The 2nd and 4th are best fit for interstellar, late-game achievements.

Modding

This mod does not have any incompatible mods as of September 23, 2026 (Still testing for incompatible mods).

Hence, all mods, including scatterer or EVE and stuff, do not apply to the ringworld, but you can still use whatever applies to the planets normally. It's just that the ringworld wouldn't look different. (Currently developing several configs for other mods for better visuals for the ringworld)

Dependencies

Suggested

  • Cyla (1.1.0) - Highly suggested. For atmospheric scattering for ring-shaped atmospheres.
  • Ringworld Clouds (1.0.0) - Highly suggested. Replicates volumetric clouds, but for the ringworld. Syncs up with the weather on the ringworld.
  • Ringworld Scattering (1.0.0) - Highly suggested. Adds scattering mechanics to bodies of water, and distant atmospheres.
  • Ringworld Parallax (1.0.0) - Highly suggested. This is a bridge for the parallax continued mod to work with the base ringworld mod.
  • Scatterer - Suggested. Adds sun flare.
  • TUFX profiles - Suggested

Other mods tested to be compatible: Deferred, BetterTimeWarpContinued, Waterfall, ReStock (1.5.1), SunkWorks (1.3.1)
