Millions of years ago, a wandering meteoroid traveled through the Kerbol system. During its passage through the inner system, the object had gravitational encounters with Eve and then Duna, which considerably reduced its velocity. Having lost enough orbital energy, the meteoroid passed close to Kerbin. The planet's gravity managed to capture it, turning it into a small natural asteroid in an unstable orbit. Scientists at the Kerbal Space Program believe the object could be one of the few asteroids naturally captured by Kerbin and due to prolonged exposure to Kerbol's radiation, its volatile-rich interior has been destabilized. At its current rate of mass loss, 2031 K1 is not expected to survive more than a few decades, making it an urgent priority for exploration.
