Engine Flames 0.4.0
for Kerbal Space Program 1.12.x

A rocket engine's exhaust as burning gas: it leaves the nozzle, is slowed and stirred by the
air, widens, cools from white through yellow to orange, strikes the ground and runs out over
it. Worked out bit by bit and drawn as a true volume, as the Volumetric Explosions mod makes
its fire, in whose air it burns.

INSTALL
This mod needs two others, each a separate download:
Keystone, the base it stands on: https://spacedock.info/mod/4665/Keystone
Volumetric Explosions, which makes and draws the fire: https://spacedock.info/mod/4669/Volumetric%20Explosions
Copy their folders (Keystone and VolumetricExplosions) into your KSP's GameData folder,
and the EngineFlames folder from this download beside them, and start the game. Without both
the game does not load this mod. One copy of each serves every mod that uses it. To remove
this mod, delete the EngineFlames folder.

USE
Nothing to do: every rocket engine has its new flame. Its settings (brightness, length,
width, and switching it off) are in the Keystone window: the keystone button on the game's
toolbar, or Option-K on a Mac and Alt-K elsewhere. Then turn to Engine Flames.

BESIDE OTHER MODS
It works with the Waterfall mod or without it. While one of its flames burns for an engine,
the flame the game or Waterfall draws for that engine is hidden; the smoke is left (the
Rocket Smoke mod does for smoke what this does for flames). Jets, ion engines and engines
that burn something it does not know keep the flames they had.

USE VOLUMETRIC EXPLOSIONS 0.6.4 OR LATER
With it the flame moves as fire does: its far end trails when the ship turns, and what is
in it streams. With an older one it works, but keeps its line like a rod.

RE-ENTRY FIRE (0.4.0, WITH VOLUMETRIC EXPLOSIONS 0.7.0 OR LATER)
A craft coming into an atmosphere fast glows: white-hot air standing off its heat shield,
streaming back past its sides into a wake that cools from gold through orange to
pink-violet, drawn as a true volume where and when the game's own flat streaks would
show, and those are hidden meanwhile. With an older Volumetric Explosions the game's own
streaks are left. Its switches are on the mod's Keystone page.

WHERE IT WORKS
Made and tried on a Mac, and tried on Windows 11. The flames are drawn by Volumetric
Explosions' shaders, packed for the game's OpenGL (a Mac, Linux) and built for Direct3D
(Windows); nobody has run it on Linux yet. Where that mod cannot draw a volume, this one
says so in its settings and leaves the game's flames as they are.
